Alabama Thunderpussy: Open fire
21/03/07 || Euthanatos
I had heard of this band before, but never really paid any attention to it, after all, it’s not like anything from Alabama is going to sound good, right (never mind the fact that they’re actually from Virginia)? Wrong. The new release caught my attention because it features Floodgate vocalist, Kyle Thomas, in the band’s ranks now, so I decided to give it a go. And, if there’s Thunderpussy in its name, it can’t possibly not have something going for it. And boy, did “Open Fire” blast my anal orifice into oblivion.
Alabama Thunderpussy plays a genre that’s not very represented in metal today, and I’m not even sure you can call it metal. The best description I can find for it is balls-out, metal-as-fuck, in-your-face rock n’ roll. It’s very heavy, insanely fun and marvelously well performed. Want some band comparisons? Always inappropriate, but mix up some Motörhead, Led Zeppelin and the better of the stoner metal crowd, and you’ll get somewhere close.
The songs are, for the most past, fast paced, which makes it all more enjoyable, and Kyle’s vocals fit in this like a fat penis fits into a midget’s vagina. He yells like there’s no tomorrow and isn’t afraid to sound more mellow when he has to, which gives a nice change every now and again from the relentless ass pounding.
Truth be told, the production is not your Andy Speap crystal clear scenario, but the dirty aspect of it does have its charm and doesn’t really harm the final product. And for all the drumming aficionados out there, Bryan Cox sure as hell will keep you entertained, even if this sound isn’t quite your cup of tea.
From the frantic opener “The Cleansing” to the evil, evil fucking knievel “Whiskey War”, this album deserves praise and your time. It certainly made a believer out of me.
P.S. The cover also kicks ass. Murdering barbarians are always cool with me, so extra brownie points there.
8.5 Virginia Pussies out of 10.
